Planet Kid became the "coolest kids' boutique in Toronto" in March of 2006 with the opening of it's doors on Queen St. W. In spring 2008 it became "the coolest kids' boutique in North America" by launching it's website - www.planetkid.ca. The flagship store moved to 87 Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto in June of 2009.
Sarajane Fillmore is the curator of all things Planet Kid. Her eye for exceptional quality and clever, thoughtful design ensures that you will always find the perfect gift. She works hard every day to keep things fresh. "I am proud to say that the vast majority of the collections at Planet Kid are by Canadian designers. And many of those designers and artists are right here in Toronto! My focus for the store is to provide a really fun shopping experience where you can get the total story behind the product and know that you are getting the very best there is."
With the perfect mix of smart design and great quality, Planet Kid has a super collection of clothes, home décor and accessories for babies and kids of all ages.
When Toronto designer Carolyn Murphy had her first baby, Ben, in 1996, she couldn’t find what she needed in the stores. She decided to seize the opportunity and get creative! The result? A cozy bunting bag, a retro cowboy jacket, a colourful crib quilt. They were beautiful! Pretty soon she was taking orders. “Hey!”, she thought, “This could be a good thing!”
That’s how Carolyn started her business. Because Ben gave her the inspiration, she named her company after him: Baby Ben. Because Davey, Ben’s little brother, one day demanded, “Why does everything have Ben’s name on it?” she named her best-selling bunting bag after him: The Davey Bag.
Carolyn's latest crib quilts are available now and exclusively through Planet Kid.
A love of gorgeous colour and sumptuous yarns inspired Sara Fillmore to start making sweaters for her baby, Henry. They were lovely! What’s more, they were a funky, durable alternative to the drab clothes available for boys. Henry looked swell in his new knitwear, and soon Sara started designing more. Sweaters were followed by the The Firekid Coat (a Hankware staple) and now Hankware has blossomed into a full line of incredible one of a kind infant and kids’ clothing. See for yourself!
When it comes to clothing, why should girls have all the fun?
That was Carol Pitre’s conclusion, and in 2004 she launched Kid Brother, a line of clothing just for boys. Disappointed by unimaginative and overpriced boys clothing, Carol decided to take matters into her own hands! Drawing on a graphic design background and the high-voltage energy of her own two boys, the Kid Brother line was born. Each piece is designed and handmade in Canada, using top quality fabrics and materials.
Kid Brother is urban, cool, and fun – aimed directly at the boys we love!
Shoe Babou was born in 1995 when Manon De Gagné made a tiny pair of shoes for a friend’s newborn baby. They were made of super-soft blue suede and carefully designed to stay on a baby's round foot. Expert stitching and a detailed design on the soles made them one of a kind.
They were beautiful!
What began as a whimsical gift has grown into a whole line of children's footwear with four models of shoes plus toasty warm shearling booties and hats for winter. Manon's careful involvement in all stages of design and construction, including her selection of only the finest and most beautiful colours of suede, make Shoe Babou shoes a quality product that is truly unique.
We've all made or seen a mark on a wall or door frame recording the height of kids in a family. Few of us live in the same house we grew up in, and those precious marks of childhood are often painted over and forgotten.
That's why Kerry Furneaux created the Periscope Growth Chart!
Periscope Growth Charts are all handmade in Kerry's workshop in Toronto. Each chart is created using vintage maps, children’s books and painted designs. Periscope growth charts allow you to record your child's height uniquely and beautifully (without marking up the door frame!), and are lovely in any room in your home.
Lifelong fabriholic Devorah Miller started sewing dresses in 2004 - with three amazing daughters in tow, it was the perfect creative outlet. Her design work reflects a passion for gorgeous prints, a background in textile history (with an M.A. focusing on the history of textiles and craft in East Asia), a love of quilting and handwork, and a life full of amazing kids!
The adoption of her daughter Samantha in 2003 inspired the name of her label. It refers to an old Chinese proverb beloved by adoptive families: “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle but will never break.”
Devorah's love of colour and unusual fabric choices have made her handmade dresses a favourite of families in Toronto and beyond!
After giving birth to her daughter, Emerson in October 2007, designer Alyssa Kerbel realized how difficult it was to find great baby basics and layering pieces for infants. Noticing a niche in the marketplace that needed to be filled, she immediately set out to design and produce her own line of organic baby basics. With eight years experience in the wholesale fashion industry (Alyssa also owns a fashion sales agency based in Toronto – www.alyssaagency.ca), Alyssa knows great fabrics, fits and good clean styling.
mini mioche is designed and manufactured entirely in Toronto, Canada where Alyssa currently resides with her husband and little girl.
